OpenAI is committed to bringing these capabilities to American science, working with the U.S. government, National Laboratories, universities, and researchers to connect frontier models with the people, supercomputers, simulations, and facilities that make American science exceptional.

Our commitments

As part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, OpenAI will support participating researchers through broad access, frontier capabilities, technical collaboration, and focused scientific campaigns. It will provide $4 million in Codex access to approximately 2,000 Genesis researchers, $3 million in API support for two large-scale scientific campaigns, and up to $10 million in API usage for $2.5 million spent. It will also make GPT‑Rosalind available to selected national-laboratory biology researchers and provide early access and cyber capabilities to selected trusted researchers.

These commitments build on work across the national-laboratory system, including an AI Jam Session, the deployment of advanced reasoning models on the Venado supercomputer, and an evaluation partnership with Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Supporting the Genesis Mission

OpenAI’s collaboration with the Department of Energy brings together DOE, its 17 National Laboratories, universities, and industry. Genesis aims to integrate AI with federal scientific data, advanced computing, experimental facilities, and expert teams—and to double the productivity and impact of American research and innovation within a decade.

Initial large-scale campaigns are intended to include work on high-temperature superconductors and an Atlas of the Machine-Accessible Frontier, examining where AI may already support meaningful scientific advances using existing knowledge, data, and computation.

A long-term commitment to national science

Government can coordinate priorities and invest in shared infrastructure. Laboratories and universities can define important problems and uphold scientific standards. Industry can contribute capabilities, engineering expertise, and deployment at scale. Researchers must remain at the center: defining questions, choosing methods, challenging outputs, and validating results.
